A Tell-Tale Symptom of Flat Feet

Flat feet are a common foot ailment that can be easy to observe. While standing up, does the entire foot lie flat on the floor? Most babies are born with flat feet, and the arch generally develops by the teenage years. This may not be the case for some adults, as genetics may contribute to having flat feet. Additionally, if a foot injury has occurred, flat feet may be the result. Many people do not experience pain with flat feet and can complete daily activities. Conversely, flat feet may cause pain and discomfort, and measures can be implemented to help reduce existing pain. These can include performing specific stretches that are tailored for patients with flat feet, in addition to wearing custom-made orthotics. If you have flat feet, it is strongly suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can monitor your balance and general foot health.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

Pregnancy Causes Changes to the Feet

The entire body changes during pregnancy, and the feet are no exception. Many women notice their feet have grown, which may be attributed to pregnancy hormones the body produces. As the pregnancy progresses, the feet may become swollen, and the arches may flatten as additional weight is gained. Relief may be found when shoes that are worn have a low heel and healthy foods are consumed. It is helpful to refrain from eating salty foods, and frequently elevating the feet may reduce the swelling. Swollen feet may also be a symptom of poor circulation, which may happen from the body recirculating extra fluid that is needed by the growing fetus. It is beneficial to stay as active as possible, drink plenty of water daily, and sleep on the left side. If you have additional questions about how pregnancy can affect the feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can address any concerns you may have.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Reasons for Foot Cramps

Anyone who has experienced a foot cramp is familiar with the discomfort it can cause. It may happen as a result of being dehydrated, or from having low potassium levels. The latter condition can be referred to as hypokalemia and may be accompanied by fatigue and weakness. Wearing tight shoes may also cause foot cramps, in addition to having specific types of nerve damage. A foot cramp is a sudden contraction of a muscle, and it can happen during the day. It may also wake a patient up from sleeping, and pointing and stretching the foot may bring temporary relief. People who frequently exercise may find they occasionally get foot cramps, possibly as a result of having overworked muscles. Existing medications may cause foot cramps. These can include asthma, blood pressure, and statin drugs, in addition to medicine for Alzheimer’s disease. If you are experiencing foot cramps, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer correct treatment options.

Health Benefits of Walking

Walking is something nearly everyone learns to do as a child. As an adult, however, it is easy to ignore walking as a beneficial type of exercise. In fact, walking is an aerobic and cardio exercise that can increase strength, improve cardiovascular health, and even help you lose weight. Experts identify five types of walking that can lower blood pressure, increase energy, improve blood flow, and just plain make you feel better. Included are race or Olympic walking, brisk walking, Nordic or pole walking, speed walking, and Chi walking. Each of these walking styles differs somewhat in distance, speed, and other considerations, such as using poles. Probably the most accessible for someone starting out is brisk walking, mainly because there are few rules involved and it is easy to do with a friend. Brisk walking is done at a conversational pace and should not cause shortness of breath. Activating the core muscles is essential to proper walking in any form and also helps to reduce the chance of injury to other body parts. For more information about the benefits of walking as an exercise, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Exercising your feet regularly with the proper foot wear is a great way to prevent injuries and build strength. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

The Perils of Wearing Flip-Flops

Flip-flops can have long-term negative consequences on the feet because of their lack of support. They put strain on joints and allow the foot to collapse. This affects the gait and posture and can put unnecessary pressure on the foot and rest of the body. This type of footwear contributes to our feet pronating for longer periods of time than is normal and can change the biomechanics of the feet. Foot deformities such as bunions and hammertoes, and painful conditions associated with overpronation, like arch and heel pain and overall body pain can result. Flip-flops should not be worn for prolonged lengths of time. It is okay to wear them for activities that are short-lived and not strenuous, like at the beach or around pools. If you would like to discuss wearing flip-flops or better alternatives, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can provide you with more information.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM from Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, FL .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Do I Need Ankle Fusion Surgery?

Ankle pain hurts and can negatively impact daily activities. There are various reasons one might have ankle pain, and having surgery performed may be an option for permanent relief. Ankle fusion surgery is described as a procedure that combines the bones of the ankle by using screws, plates, or possibly bone grafts. This is primarily done to reduce ankle arthritis, and is generally chosen as a last resort option. It may also be done to treat abnormal ankle structure, infections, or a failed ankle replacement. The benefits that may be gained by having this type of surgery performed can include improved foot stability, permanent pain relief, and it may be easier to complete daily activities. Additionally, the overall quality of life may be improved, and possible disability may be reduced. If you have ankle arthritis, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine if ankle fusion surgery is best for you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM of Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our offices located in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Signs of an Achilles Tendon Rupture

The Achilles tendon is the longest and strongest tendon in the body, and its job is to absorb a great deal of stress. This tendon connects the muscles in the calf to the heel, allowing you to be active on your feet. A ruptured Achilles tendon is either partially or completely torn, which causes a popping sound and extreme pain behind the heel. This is a common injury to athletes, usually between the ages of 30 and 40, and is more common in men than women. Symptoms of a partially torn Achilles tendon include swelling and bruising at the heel, pain while walking up stairs or hills, and difficulty bearing weight. A fully ruptured tendon, however, stops you in your tracks and requires immediate medical attention. Healing from a ruptured Achilles tendon can take as long as six months. An ankle brace or walking brace is usually prescribed, and surgery may be required to mend the torn tendon. For more information on an Achilles tendon rupture, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Shaun J. Limon, DPM and Lisa Griffith-Limon, DPM of Limons Foot & Ankle Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses
